9 Things You Need to Know

Sunfest Country Music Festival is a ‘What You Bring In, You Pack Out’ event. 2015 marked the first ever ‘Leave No Trace’ policy at the event, which saw a massive reduction in post-festival waste thanks to everyone who attended Sunfest 2015/2016. The ‘Leave No Trace Policy’ will be strictly enforced again during 2018, with the help Island Return It and Sunfest Staff/Volunteers. This means that you will be asked to utilize the proper recycling and waste receptacles provided by Sunfest. These will be located throughout the grounds as well as conveniently located in the campsite areas, making it easy to properly dispose of recyclables and waste. We believe strongly in environmental stewardship and making our event a ‘GREEN’ event.

We ask that everyone packs out any additional belongings with them, including camping gear, chairs and tents, as these items were never designed to be ‘single-use.’ The Sunfest Team asks that you leave your campsite in the same pristine condition as when you entered the festival grounds.

Every year the Sunfest community grows and we need to work together to create an environmentally conscious and sustainable event. We thank you for your support and look forward to seeing you in 2018.

There will be onsite day parking available Thursday through Sunday. Parking is $10 per day and vehicles left overnight must be moved by 10am the following day or will be charged for an additional day of parking.

Weekend parking passes are also available. If you do not have a weekend parking pass but require parking for the course of the event, consider these 4 options:

#1. Leave the car at home and carpool with your friends
#2. If you are leaving from Victoria or Langford, reserve your round trip seat on Wilson’s Transportation Shuttle Service. Please visit the website for further details.
#3. Please note that each campsite includes 1 vehicle. If yours in the only car or truck…that space is yours!
#4. You can pay daily for single day parking. HOWEVER, this will require you to visit our ticket booth daily no later than 10am.

2018 will see increased traffic control coordination, provided by the Ministry of Transport, the RCMP and Sunfest staff and volunteers. Please follow all posted signage as you enter and exit the site.

ABSOLUETLY NO PARKING on Hwy 18, Youbou Rd, Indian Rd, North Shore Rd or Teleglobe Rd AT ANY TIME. If you park in these areas you will 100% be towed at your own expense.

LOCAL TRAFFIC ONLY on Indian Rd and North Shore Rd.

PLEASE OBEY REDUCED SPEED LIMITS on Youbou Rd. Traffic will be slowed to 50km/hr 1km East and West of Laketown Ranch for safety of all patrons and local traffic.

Please note that campsite drop-offs are not permitted in the campsite area. A gear and passenger shuttle for upper campsites will be running on a continuous loop to assist patrons to their site if required. Please inquire about the camping shuttle service upon arrival.

Offsite day parking is located in Duncan at the Island Savings Centre and Cowichan Exhibition Grounds and from Lake Cowichan and Youbou. A comprehensive scheduled shuttle bus service will be running each day to and from Sunfest. Please visit our website for details.

Access to free watering stations is a top priority at Sunfest to keep everyone hydrated and happy. Water stations will be located in the Concert Bowl, campsites and near Laketown Flats. We believe everyone should have the fundamental right to free and accessible water. Please note that our water comes from a natural aquifer located directly under the property and has been rigorously tested for human consumption. It is 100% potable and local!

Please note that there will be no RV water refill stations onsite this year at Sunfest. Please fill your RV prior to arrival.

Showers and flush toilets are located onsite at Laketown Flats. Showers are open daily from 8am to 5pm.

The Traffic and Grounds Staff at Sunfest want to make everyone’s life easier when it comes to the campsite. This year, when you arrive, our friendly staff will show you to your spot, register your name to your numbered campsite and assist you with parking your vehicle or RV. Vehicles will be parked according to when they arrive. To ensure that you camp with your entire group please arrive together.

RV and Trailer Sites

Measure your rig! If you purchased a space for a 30ft RV and your RV measures in at 35ft, you will be moved to a site that can properly accommodate your vehicle and will be charged extra. To ensure that you camp with your group, please measure your vehicle beforehand.

Sunfest RV sites are issued based on RV size, with individual numbers assigned to each space. The camping area for 2018 has been organized on a site-by-site basis and certain RV’s if measured improperly simply cannot fit as they block fire lanes and roadways. Plan ahead and measure your rig.

No Drop-offs in Camping

There will be zero drop-offs permitted in camping this year. While it made arriving at your campsite more direct for your group last year, it caused too much traffic congestion and increased wait times for vehicles entering the festival. Our friendly staff will show cars that are parked in our weekend lot to their space, but your group will kindly have to shuttle all camping gear to your designated site.

Giving back to the community is part of our mandate, and will continue to be a strong gauge of the success of Sunfest Country Music Festival. It is so important in fact, that we have raised over $550,000, benefiting vital organizations in our community including: the Cowichan District Hospital Foundation, MS Society, Canadian Diabetes Association, Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Rotary Club of Duncan, Duncan Chamber of Commerce and nearly twenty elementary, middle and high schools in the area. From health care to education to athletics, we place a profound importance on our benevolence program, and hope that you do too.

Our legacy of community alliance spans over a decade, supporting and leveraging tangible benefits to nearly 50 charities, non-profits, schools, community partners and causes. Additionally, the annual event contributes to the economic, social, cultural and agricultural growth of the Cowichan Valley, having infused over 4 million dollars into local business through direct and indirect investment and employment opportunities since our inception.

The Cowichan Exhibition Grounds, who graciously played host to Sunfest for many years, have received annual monetary donations totalling more than $125,000. We have believed strongly in improving the agricultural capacity of Cow Ex for many years.

Together, we are positively shaping the community of the Cowichan Valley, and that’s something we can all stand behind.

August Long Weekend is notoriously HOT. THERE ARE ABSOLUTELY NO FIRES PERMITTED AT SUNFEST! That means no fire pits, charcoal BBQ’s or tiki torches. Please adhere to all posted fire ban regulations. Cook stoves must be 3.5 feet off the ground. Have a fire extinguisher on site at your camp. SMOKE IN DESIGNATED AREAS AND NEVER PLACE A CIGARETTE BUTT ON THE GROUND.

Please respect the communities of Lake Cowichan and Youbou. This includes residents, tourists, local business, the environment, wildlife and roadways. Please keep the following in mind:

#1. Please obey all posted signage
#2. DRIVE SLOWLY. Children, and pets play here
#3. Keep the lake, parks and community clean. Pick up after yourself and others
#4. Please respect quiet times. RCMP will be stationed in town. There is to be absolutely NO NOISE in the residential or commercial areas of either town past 11pm
#5. If you require offsite amenities please use the Sunfest Shuttle Service to Lake Cowichan, Youbou or Duncan.

With temperatures set to soar in the Cowichan Valley over the next few days, it’s important to take extra precautions to keep yourself safe and comfortable. Aside from the obvious (wearing sunscreen and reapplying often, bringing a hat and sunglasses, and drinking plenty of water) we have a bunch of amenities here at the Ranch to keep you cool.

  • Water bottle refill stations located on opposite ends of the bathroom buildings
  • Shade tents
  • Bottled water for purchase
  • 100.3 The Q! The Island’s Rock’s “HQO” Misting Tent!
  • Ice for purchase – $5/bag or $20/5 bags
  • Showers for $5
  • Ice cream from Day Dream Ice Cream
  • The lake! We have a shuttle to Lake Cowichan (a 5-minute trip) running loops through the weekend
  • The woods! We’re on 172 acres of forested land with plenty of natural shade

Please be sure to look out for your fellow festival goers! If you notice anyone who seems to be succumbing to the heat, please flag a volunteer or staff member, or notify the Field Hospital.
